PC GUIDES & ADVICE

PC parts explained: a beginner’s buying guide

← All PC guides

You do not need to know every specification to plan a PC. It helps to understand each part’s job and ask how the proposed components work together.

Processor: the CPU

The CPU carries out instructions and helps run your applications. Compare the exact model and generation against the work you need it to do. A product family name alone does not describe performance.

Graphics: integrated or dedicated?

A GPU handles graphics-related work. Integrated graphics can suit lighter tasks where supported; demanding games and some creative workflows benefit from a suitable dedicated graphics card. Match the choice to your software and display rather than appearance.

Memory and storage do different jobs

RAM holds information in use; storage keeps your files and applications. More storage does not replace insufficient memory. An SSD is a common choice for the operating system and active applications; capacity should account for files, games and room to grow. Read our RAM guide for more on memory planning.

The parts that make the build work

  • Motherboard: connects the components and determines supported processors, memory, ports and expansion options.
  • Power supply: must suit the system’s power needs and connectors. Wattage alone does not establish quality or compatibility.
  • Cooling and case: must fit the components and allow suitable airflow. Consider dimensions and noise as well as appearance.
  • Network connections: check whether Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or wired networking is included.

Questions worth asking before you buy

Ask for the exact component models, included software licences, monitor connections and what setup or testing is included. Check case clearance, processor support, memory type and power requirements together. Avoid assuming a component can be upgraded later without checking the platform.
