PC GUIDES & ADVICE
How much RAM do you need for your PC?
← All PC guidesThere is no single RAM capacity that suits everyone. Start with your applications, the tasks you run together and the size of your projects.
What RAM does
RAM is working space for information your PC is using. When you run several applications or work with larger projects, memory demand can rise. RAM capacity is separate from SSD capacity and graphics-card memory.
Choose for your workload
- Everyday use and study: check browser, office and course-software requirements. Consider how many applications you keep open.
- Gaming: check the recommended memory for your actual games and account for background applications.
- Creative work: larger images, timelines, datasets and projects can need more memory than basic tasks. Follow the requirements for your software version and workflow.
As one example, Adobe’s current Photoshop requirements recommend 16 GB or more. That is a software-specific recommendation, not a promise that 16 GB is sufficient for every creative workflow. Check Adobe’s current requirements before choosing.
More memory does not fix every slowdown
If memory is already sufficient, additional capacity may provide little benefit for your current tasks. Processor, graphics, storage, cooling and software can also affect responsiveness. Use your actual workload to identify the limiting factor.
Check compatibility and upgrade plans
Confirm the motherboard’s memory type, supported capacity, available slots and the proposed memory kit. DDR4 and DDR5 are different standards and are not interchangeable. Check the exact system documentation before buying an upgrade.
