PC GUIDES & ADVICE
Setting up your new PC: a practical checklist
← All PC guidesA little preparation helps you get comfortable with a new PC. Follow the instructions supplied with your hardware and confirm which setup tasks your builder has already completed.
1. Check the handover details
Review the agreed components, included software and support information. Keep receipts and licence details. Inspect the computer and accessories for visible delivery damage before setting them up, and contact the supplier if something seems wrong.
2. Connect your workspace
Place the tower on a stable surface with clear ventilation. Connect your keyboard, mouse and network connection as needed. If the PC has a dedicated graphics card, use the intended display output described in the handover instructions. Avoid forcing connectors.
3. Review updates and drivers
Check Windows Update and install suitable updates. Obtain drivers from Windows Update or the official hardware manufacturer. Avoid unfamiliar driver-download sites. Restart when requested and check that audio, networking and displays work as expected.
4. Protect your accounts
Use unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where available. Review privacy settings and install software only from trusted sources. If device encryption is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key associated with the relevant account and keep it safe. Microsoft explains device encryption and recovery-key handling.
5. Arrange backups
Decide which files matter and arrange a backup you can restore. Check the coverage and storage limits of any cloud service; do not assume every folder is protected. Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide explains its supported features. Keep an additional copy of important files where appropriate and test that you can recover them.
6. Try your normal tasks
Install properly licensed applications, set your preferred display settings and try the tasks you bought the PC for. If something is not working, record the error message and what you were doing, then contact the supplier. Do not open the power supply or attempt unfamiliar electrical repairs.
